Reading and writing must be intertwined to create a dynamic literacy environment that illuminates the way to a variety of real-world experiences in which a learner can participate.
Read Aloud
The third grade reading and writing curriculum of Saline Schools incorporates a balanced literacy program focusing on narrative and informational texts. The 3rd grade reading and writing program will follow the Reader's Workshop/Writer's Worskshop model to individualize instruction.
Reading Units of Study
Writing Units of Study
- Reading quality literature to students that is chosen purposefully
- Modeling reading strategies and thinking aloud with students
- Discussing and reflecting on literature that may not be otherwise accessible for some students
- Students read literature that is within their zone of proximal development
- Allows independent practice strategies to be engaged by readers
- Teacher-led small groups that allow for individualized instruction targeted to the needs of a specific group of learners
- Allows the teacher to group students based on instructional needs and academic abilities to make reading a beneficial learning experience for below, at and above grade-level students
- One-on-one conferences that allow for teacher intervention and instruction in reading
- Students set goals
- Focus strategies: comprehension (compare/contrast, predict, summarize, generalize, etc.), accuracy, fluency, expanded vocabulary, etc.
- Reading intentionally-chosen texts as a class to discover, discuss and understand a variety of genres in writing
- Allows for the teacher to demonstrate steps in the writing process while modeling a specific genre of writing using a chosen text
- Allows students independent practice time to master writing strategies and techniques
- One-on-one conferences that allow for teacher intervention and instruction in writing
- Gives students and teachers a time to meet together to check in on progress within the writing process
- Provides an allotted time to work with a student in order to promote maximum potential in learning
