"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically… Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education." - Martin Luther King Jr.
I believe teaching Social Studies is important in preparing our students to be active participants, citizens, and critics of our society. I also believe that Social Studies needs to be taught in an interactive and engaging way best suited to promote maximum engagement and learning. Teaching social studies effectively requires teachers to combine history, geography, economics and politics and bring these together under the realm of real-world, everyday student experience.
When you walk into my classroom during a Social Studies' lesson, you will not only see multi-sensory whole group instruction, but you will also see my students experiencing, creating, and reflecting collaboratively to make this learning come alive for the students! You might see students creating a Michigan map or researching together to find new information on their devices!
